When I first came to US as an International Student, child care seemed to be the only option since I had to find a place to stay and be able to pay my tuition at the same time. I worked as a nanny for three families who are different in terms of their culture, religion and affiliations. I simply helped them to get ready for school, dropped them off and picked them up. When they are at school, it was time for light cleaning, grocery shopping and light cleaning around the house. After school hours, encouraged them to their homework first and do activities around the neighborhood. At night time before dinner, we would do a short check on the home work in case we have left out anything. I helped setting the table up and participating in cooking. Night time was relaxing, watching a movie or telling stories they might enjoy (if they are young enough of course). When they are over 14, they do not like stories too much. During those 5 years, the children I took care of ranged between 4-15 and I learned something with every one of them. I really enjoy being with children though I never had a chance to have my own.
